AFFF stands for Aqueous Film Forming Foam, a fire-fighting foam widely used to extinguish flammable liquid fires, such as fuel fires. AFFF works by creating a film on the surface of the liquid, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire and suppressing its vapors.
AFFF is particularly effective for Class B fires (fires involving flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, and jet fuel). However, many formulations of AFFF contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are chemicals known for their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. Because of this, AFFF has been at the center of environmental concerns and legal actions related to AFFF exposure and long-term exposure to PFAS.
These concerns have led to growing efforts to phase out PFAS-containing AFFF products and develop alternative, environmentally safer fire-fighting foams.
AFFF contains PFAS, which have been shown to contaminate soil, groundwater, and drinking water supplies, especially near military bases, airports, and industrial sites where AFFF was frequently used to extinguish fuel fires. People living or working in these areas may have been exposed to high levels of PFAS through drinking water and direct contact.
Numerous lawsuits have been filed by local governments and states against chemical manufacturers, seeking compensation for the costs of cleaning up PFAS contamination and addressing the health impacts on communities.
AFFF lawsuits are expected to expand as more people become aware of the health risks and contamination sites are identified. Many of these cases could result in significant financial settlements or judgments for personal injury and environmental cleanup costs.
